Opes Financial

A financial planner for Newcastle clients, delivered virtually.

A financial planner covering retirement, superannuation, insurance and tax-effective investing for clients across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter. Meetings by video. Service identical to in-person engagements.

Newcastle inner-east residential street at dusk with terrace houses and verandahs and the ocean a faint dark band in the distance.

How we work with Newcastle clients.

Every meeting runs on Zoom or Teams. Document exchange happens through secure upload, and signatures are captured electronically. Newcastle and Hunter clients have engaged the practice this way for years. None of it is new.

Hours run 8am to 7pm AEST. Useful for clients in Cooks Hill and The Junction catching a call before work, and for shift-pattern clinicians at John Hunter Hospital who can only talk after 6.

Phone is available on 1300 67 37 37 or 0419 506 560. Most files run on a mix of one introductory call, one strategy meeting, and one Statement of Advice walkthrough.

There is no Newcastle office. The work runs virtually, and has for years.

The practice runs out of Suite 11.18, 401 Docklands Drive, Melbourne. Newcastle clients engage by video and phone. There is no Hunter Street address, no plan to open one, and no postcode restrictions on the advice itself.

Newcastle has increasingly become a Sydney-overflow market. We see that in the files. The advice we deliver does not change shape because the household relocated from the lower North Shore to Merewether, but the cash-flow assumptions usually do.

What this means in practice
  • All meetings by video or phone.
  • No in-person option in the Hunter.
  • The same adviser, the same scope, the same fees.

What we advise on for Newcastle clients.

01

Retirement and transition

Drawdown sequencing, transition-to-retirement strategies, and the final ten working years. The structural work is no different in Newcastle than in Sydney.

02

Superannuation, accumulation

Fund selection, consolidation of legacy accounts, salary sacrifice and co-contribution. Common need for mid-career Hunter professionals.

03

Personal risk insurance

Income protection, TPD, trauma, life cover. Business insurance for self-employed clients. Sized to the household, not to a premium target.

04

Tax-effective investing

Negative gearing, franking credits, ownership structures. Coordinated with the household accountant locally or in Sydney.

05

Education, aged care, Centrelink

Children's education funding, aged-care fee planning, Centrelink optimisation. Federal rules that travel with the client.

06

SMSF strategy alongside

SMSF advice itself sits outside this AR. SMSF lending and broader strategy are handled within the practice for Hunter trustees.

Comprehensive advice is delivered as a written Statement of Advice. Minimum engagement for managed-fund investment is $50,000.

Newcastle clients we work with.

Inner Newcastle households in Cooks Hill, Bar Beach, Merewether and The Junction. Many of these files are Sydney expats who moved north in the last five years for lifestyle and price, often carrying a Sydney mortgage tail and a different cash-flow shape than long-term locals. Pre-retirees commonly start with retirement and drawdown work, supported by the broader retirement planning hub.

Lake Macquarie families in Belmont and Warners Bay. Hunter Valley clients across Maitland, Cessnock and the wine-country fringe. Self-employed trades and viticulture income are not unusual on the books.

Sydney loan sizes do not always translate cleanly to Newcastle purchase prices, which means the planning brief often starts with what to do with surplus borrowing capacity rather than how to stretch it. The borrowing capacity calculator is the easiest first read, and specialist files from the John Hunter Hospital catchment are a regular pattern.

Cross-pillar in the Hunter

Through a licensed partner with reach across NSW, including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.

What Newcastle clients usually ask first.

No. The practice runs from Docklands, Melbourne. Newcastle and Hunter engagements run by video and phone. There is no Hunter Street office and no plan to open one.
A calendar invite with a Zoom or Teams link, sent in advance. Documents are uploaded through a secure portal beforehand. The Statement of Advice is delivered electronically and walked through in a screen-share session.
Mostly on the cash-flow side, not the structural side. Sydney mortgage tails, super accounts opened with NSW employers, and capital gains exposure on a former main residence are all common items we work through with relocators.
Electronically. We use compliant e-signing for the Statement of Advice, authority forms, and any insurer documentation that accepts it. Physical signatures only where a counterparty still requires them.
No. The first conversation is a free virtual consultation. A discussion of goals and constraints, not a sales pitch, with no obligation to proceed.

Start with a virtual first call.

Thirty minutes by phone or video. The same conversation Newcastle clients have had with us for years.
